No I’m not towing a trailer, it’s just me and one other person in an Expedition... and a lot of Pelican cases. Also, staying and Valet(ing) in downtown Waikiki for $39/night................

That’s a huge car in Hawaii, you should swap it for a mustang convertible.

I just assumed every rental car in Hawaii was a Wrangler.

I don’t envy you filling that thing up in Hawaii.

That and a Mustang convertible.

with a healthy dose of base c7 convertible

I was on the Big Island in February. I think a mustang convertible might be the state car of Hawaii. I’m just curious where all the old ones go to.

Same when I was there last. I bet they all go to carmax.

I was surprised to not see a bunch of 10 year old Mustang convertibles being driven locals. It seems like cutting a good deal to the locals would work out better than shipping them to the West Coast to be sold at auction, but it doesn’t appear to work out that way.

If you don’t get drunk and hit on tourists on Lewers St. you are doing it wrong. Also, go to Arnolds, its right across from the post office. I want a full report if that place is still the hole in the wall it once was.

Locals don’t have convertibles, cause it’s easier to fit a surfboard on a Tacoma.

TOURISTS
Seriously, I spent 2 month in HI last year, I never saw that many Nissan Quests in my life!? Nissan must have done a sweet deal to the rental companies

Why are you in Hawaii?

Does it wear its age well?

The State car is the Tacoma out here

Will do! Hopefully getting to Ted’s bakery this week for some donuts

It’s not bad at all when you fill-up on base

It’s getting rough to be honest and exactly the same in the inside as it’s always been

“Work”...? Yeah, that old thing but I’ve been able to ditch it easily this trip

Yeah I noticed that not much has changed in the 10 years this gen has been around.

Does one need a reason to go to Hawaii?

I was on the big island a couple of years ago. I rented a Camaro Convertible.
It was really fun, but I quickly wished I had a wrangler instead. I did a bit of offroading in a convertible to get to my friend’s house.

We has Buick Regal GS. It too ended up doing some off-roading to get to Makalawena beach.

Get a slice of pineapple macadamia nut cheesecake while you are at Ted’s! If that is your sort of thing.

Oh these cases are full of equipment not book sticks sadly

Hmm, well I’m from Oahu and Waikiki is awful! I applaud you for not getting a Mustang, I will forever see a Mustang as a rental car on Oahu. Every sunburnt middle American gets one and matching ABC aloha shirts for their family.

Yeah didn’t have a choice, we needed the space. Our co-workers totally got shafted with a shot box Mustang convertible, literally had nothing else but Mustangs they said.
How is the Tacoma so flippin popular out here?!?! I was sitting at a light and counted 18 over the course of trying to get through to the Kuhio Ave today. Those trucks are expensive on the mainland so I couldn’t imagine the cost out here. Also, how much is registration out here?
![]() 07/12/2017 at 22:39 |

Yeah the Taco is a staple of the islands, the Titan was super popular when it came out too. There is a huge Japanese element to the islands. You won’t really get a feel for that visiting, but a high percentage of the technical working class like electricians in the islands are Japanese/mixed and those families place education higher overall so when new trucks are bought I guess Toyota comes first. They run forever so you can’t blame them, although the old ones when I was kid would rust down a line on the side of them. I don’t think registration is any worse than CA.

yeah...like photography equipment or what? You taking photos or making videos?

That should have read “boom sticks”... also, no. It’s more like “stuff and things”, G-13 Classified wink wink nudge nudge.
And today I threw $20 in the tank since I thought I saw a good price and it got me NOTHING! It does ride well on these roads though.

Lol figured re: boom sticks.
But...now I’m just more interested...

$39 a night? Maybe if you’re sleeping in the car...

Valet is $39/night. My room is much more
